VALE - BOB GROOM
Bob Groom was a Foundation Member of the Morley Bowling Club, having joined the Club at its inception in 1976.
He was a keen supporter of the Club and was actively involved as a player until about 2 years ago, when failing health forced him to retire. Despite this fact, he still came into the club on a reasonably regular basis to have a drink and a chat.
Bob was also a very good bowler in his heyday and over a span of some 15 years he won all of the Club’s major championship events; namely:
1977/78 – Triples with Graham Hardy and Bert Millborrow.
Fours with Graham Hardy, Bert Millborrow and Norm Cantrell
1980/81 - Singles
1984/85 - Pairs with Keith Clements
Triples with Keith Clements and Tom Carrmody
1985/86 - Fours with Frank Proctor, Reg Merchant and Ray Nimmo
1989/90 - Fours with Ernie Sharp, Mal Gray and Norm Roberts.
As mentioned Bob was an active pennants player throughout his bowling career until he was forced to retire.
During recent years Bob developed a liking for Thailand and he travelled there several times to escape the Perth winters. We understand that it was on his recent visit to there in the winter of 2020 that Bob passed away.
Our photo shows Bob, Lola Dunstan and then President Trevor Smith cutting the Club’s 40th-anniversary cake at a function held in 2016. Sadly, these three former members are all now deceased.
